Roof Lanterns

A roof lantern a multi-paned glass structure which is fitted into a flat roof in order to provide natural light into the room below, so its really a form of skylight window and often referred to as roof lantern skylight or roof dome; it's more visually appealing than a standard skylight window and is seen as a “green roofing” in terms of its energy and health benefits. To buy a roof lantern and have it fitted is much cheaper than many people imagine so lets look at roof lanterns in more detail.

Roof Lanterns – A Striking Visual Feature

If you want to install a roof lantern, you can improve the appeal of your house not only from the outside but also add a striking feature within it which will make your roof, feel bigger lighter and more welcoming. Here we will look at the history of roof lanterns and how if you have a roof lantern fitted you can improve your home at a very competitive cost.

History

Roof lanterns were seen in roofs in the 16th century in France and Italy and were referred to as orangeries and spread to the UK in the Georgian era, where they were the preserve of the wealthy members of society and seen as a structure of status. The first roof lanterns were made of timber and glass and were not very weather resistant and prone to water leakage.

Skylights became more popular when metal construction became common place in the 1800s with the onset of the Victorian era. In fact it was common for urban row houses of the late-19th and early-20th centuries to have a metal-framed skylight to shed light into its enclosed stairwell, the wealthy of the era also favoured the roof lantern but their skylights were more elaborate, with many making the roof window a feature such as a miniature glass-paneled conservatory style window or tower.

Roof Lanterns a More Attractive Alternative than Skylights

Roof lanterns are a feature which can be far more striking than plain skylights which are used in numerous homes and commercial premises. They allow for unique views of the outside, and provide considerably more internal and external visual appeal than standard skylights.

With advancements in glazing and sealing techniques roof lanterns can have the same traditional look which dates back to the early grand roof lanterns but with the added bonus of insulated glass and sealants, which reduce energy loss and prevent water leaks much in the same way as skylight windows. Roof lanterns are built of both wood and aluminium, depending on the style of the building and the preference of the buyer.
